High-Precision Imaging That Combines Function and Structure for Better Diagnosis

PET/CT is a powerful hybrid imaging technology that combines Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with Computed Tomography (CT) in a single exam. This fusion of functional and anatomical data gives physicians a clearer, more complete picture of what’s happening inside your body. PET/CT is especially valuable in detecting cancer, evaluating the extent of disease, planning treatments, and tracking progress over time.

What Is a PET/CT Scan?

A PET scan captures information about how your body’s cells are functioning. It identifies areas of increased metabolic activity, which often signal disease such as cancer—even before changes become visible in anatomy. A CT scan, on the other hand, produces highly detailed images of internal structures like organs, bones, and tissues.

When these two types of scans are combined into a PET/CT scan, your care team can more accurately pinpoint the exact location of abnormal activity within the body. This dual insight significantly improves the ability to detect disease early, plan treatment with precision, and reduce the need for unnecessary exploratory procedures or biopsies.

What to Expect During a PET/CT Scan

Before the scan begins, you will receive a small injection of a radioactive tracer—most commonly a glucose-based compound. Because disease processes like cancer often consume more glucose than normal cells, the tracer naturally accumulates in abnormal tissues, which then appear as “hot spots” on the PET scan.

The tracer is safe and used in extremely small amounts. After the injection, you’ll relax in a quiet room for 30 to 60 minutes while the tracer circulates through your body. This resting period is important to ensure consistent uptake and accurate results.

Once you are ready for the scan, you will lie on a padded table that slowly moves through the scanner. The machine captures both the PET and CT images in a single session. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly during the CT portion. The entire scan is painless, and a technologist will be monitoring and communicating with you throughout the process.

How Long Does It Take?

The total time spent at the imaging center is typically between 2 to 3 hours. This includes check-in, injection of the radiotracer, uptake period, and the scan itself, which usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area being evaluated.

What Happens After Your PET/CT Scan?

You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after the exam. To help flush the remaining tracer from your system, it’s recommended that you drink plenty of water. One of our radiologists will interpret your PET/CT images and send a detailed report to your referring physician. Your doctor will then contact you to review the results and determine next steps in your care plan.

When Is PET/CT Used?

PET/CT scans are most commonly used in the diagnosis and management of cancer, but they are also valuable for evaluating other serious conditions. Common uses include:

  • Detecting cancer and determining whether it has spread
  • Assessing the effectiveness of chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • Detecting cancer recurrence
  • Evaluating brain disorders, such as epilepsy or dementia
  • Identifying heart damage after a heart attack
  • Planning radiation therapy with precise targeting

Key Benefits of PET/CT Imaging

  • Early detection of disease before physical symptoms or structural changes
  • Accurate staging of cancers and assessment of treatment response
  • Reduced need for exploratory surgery or additional diagnostic tests
  • Single, comprehensive scan that saves time and provides both functional and structural data
  • Safe, noninvasive, and well-tolerated by most patients

The Power of Functional + Structural Imaging

Seeing both how your body is working and what it looks like at the same time allows your care team to make more confident decisions. Whether you are in the early stages of diagnosis, undergoing cancer treatment, or being monitored for recurrence, PET/CT gives your physician the full picture needed to act with precision.
